Guatemala is situated in Central America. There is a coast to the Pacific Ocean which is 240 km long as well as a smaller Caribic coast to the Atlantic Ocean. To the north Guatemala borders Mexico, to the east Belize and to the southeast Honduras and El Salvador.
Guatemala primarily consists of mountainous highlands. It extends from the Pacific coast and its narrow hot and humid lowlands over the warm temperate highlands to the tropical low-lying area of the Golf of Honduras. In the north there is a hilly region with tropical rainforests on the peninsula of Yucatán. With the Tajumulco, which has an altitude of 4,220 meters, Guatemala has the largest volcano of Central America. Altogether Guatemala has 33 volcanoes of which three of them are considered as active.
